Within the vaulted chambers of this vast mausoleum, this edifice of tortured architecture and grotesque adornments, I stand before the tomb, its resolute stone slabs thickly wrapped in the dust of centuries. And though all is silent, only my own breathing breaking the sacred stillness like a sacrilegious intrusion upon this unholy sanctum, I can sense its presence - the aura of ancient ineffable evil, dead and yet undying. A spirit climbing the countless steps from death, to sleep…to awakening!
Spawned in the fetid breeding ground of the nascent New York/New Jersey death metal scene in the dying embers of the ‘80s – first as Mortuary before adopting the Deteriorot moniker – Deteriorot are a part of the very fabric of death metal, intrinsic to its essential essence. Each release to bear their name is a reminder of the rotten heart of what has become a fragmented genre…and the time has come for another outpouring of horror and decay, the time has come for Awakening! Deteriorot’s fourth full length album is a blend of vehement velocity and megalithic riffs, guitar lines imbued with evil and an atmosphere of skin crawling menace. The songs feel like ancient, weatherworn ruins, shaped by the passing ages – uncompromising and impervious to the insidious workings of trends, tastes and fashions. From the war torn and primal ‘In Battle To Survive’ with its cascading drum fills, to the shambling, rotten riffs of ‘Horrors In An Everlasting Nightmare, Deteriorot preside over their blood drenched field of battle like primordial gods of death. ‘Winter Moon’ possesses an arsenal of riffs that could vaporize the world and a closing solo like the screams of tormented souls, ‘In Silence’ is gargantuan, a regal procession for the tarnished majesty of the lord of rot and ruin and ‘The Spirit’ is a rampaging metallic monster that delivers us to the final benediction of ‘To Sleep’, where the beast returns to its tomb. With Awakening, Deteriorot have delivered another magnificent pronouncement of doom, another unquestionable outpouring of dark power and destruction.
Armed with a guitar tone to shake the earth and some classic death metal artwork, Awakening will be unleashed by Xtreem Music on October 21st – on CD, 12"LP, Cassette & Digital formats. The Deteriorot legend continues...never forget, that only death is real.
