FINAL COIL – THE WORLD WE INHERITED
LABEL: SLIPTRICK RECORDS RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 16th 2024 “Do you begin to see then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself” – George OrwellSince their earliest beginnings Final Coil have created music of substance, songs of inspired musical imagination and lyrical weight, carefully sculpted from deep wells of thought and emotion. Each release from this remarkable band is a sonic edifice to be admired, a monument of creativity to stand the test of time. Adding to their already impressive catalogue, The World We Inherited represents the crowning glory of a triptych of records begun with their vibrant debut Persistence Of Memory and continued with the highly critically acclaimed The World We Left Behind For Others. As ever with Final Coil it represents a huge stride forward into ever richer and more colourful landscapes of sound and more challenging, thought provoking lyrical exploration. It is an album for now and an album for the decades to come.
“We live in an era of unprecedented threat. Flashing headlines, endless conflicts both inter and intra-civilisational in nature, and the swirling voices of social media have coalesced to create a cold and unforgiving world. We heard freedom’s call, but we failed to keep it within our grasp.”
– Phil Stiles
Whereas the albums that preceded it examined our past, the societal failings that have brought us to our troubled present, The World We Inherited turns its gaze to the future and the shadows of fear and division that bleed across its horizon. Inspired in no small part by a long and winding conversation with Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman as well as the prophetic, dystopian fiction of George Orwell, The World We Inherited wanders through a murky, broken world of conspiracy theories, authoritarian politics and chilling isolation. Yet, while the lyrics and concepts provide the framework for The World We Inherited, it is the beautifully textured music that draws the listener into the world of Final Coil and enfolds them in a breathtaking experience encompassing overwhelming melancholy, fierce intensity, passion, terror, confusion and starlit glimmers of hope.
Drawing on the textures of post-rock, the emotional drive of grunge, the fire of heavy rock and the imaginative sorcery of progressive rock and metal the Final Coil sound is both fresh and original , as well as rooted in an array of influences from across the musical spectrum. The fluid bass work of Jola Stiles augments and anchors the entwined guitars of Phil Stiles and Richard Awdry, while the vibrant, instinctive drumming of Barry French steers the band through the exquisite song structures. Meanwhile, Phil’s emotive vocals (often complemented by Richard’s twisted harmonies), guide the listener through each harrowing chapter of the unfolding tale.
“How often do people, faced with their own personal fears, try to overcome them by focusing on some aspect of their lives that brought a moment of fleeting happiness amidst the paranoia?”
– Phil StilesNow aligned with international label SlipTrick Records, Final Coil are ready to present the final staggering chapter in the Persistence Trilogy. Recorded at Parlour Studios with renowned producer Russ Russell (Amorphis, The Wildhearts, Napalm Death etc), who, such was his enthusiasm for the project, also mixed and mastered the album, The World We Inherited sounds magnificent, with all the strength, depth and varied textures that its grand subject matter demands. The panoramic artwork that adorns the album was created for the band by Andy Pilkington (Mordred, Flotsam & Jetsam, Rock Goddess etc), continuing a working relationship that began with the Persistence Of Memory album, back in 2017.
