Ghostheart Nebula - Blackshift

    GHOSTHEART NEBULA - BLACKSHIFT

    LABEL: MEUSE MUSIC RECORDS

    RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 17th 2024

The secrets that we turned our gaze away from are all laid bare. We stand, soul shaken, before the enormity of reality; the impossible distances, the farthest shores, the endless night… There is not space in our heart for the overwhelming loneliness as the true scale of the arching, empty heavens permeates the pathways of our mind. In the end, for all our dreams and plans, all our tempestuous emotions, our loves and lies, our selfishness and sacrifice…in the end we were always nothing.

“Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.”
― Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space

There are albums that can thrill and excite, there are albums that can hold mirrors up to human thoughts and emotions, albums that can lead you away from reality for a short while – a break from the travails of life. And then there are albums that can overwhelm you with their depth, strength and vision. Blackshift is the second album from Italian cosmic doom metal band Ghostheart Nebula and to listen to its enveloping waves of sound and thunder is to tumble across the firmament, dwarfed by the magnificent magnitude of existence, to understand like never before the solitude and insignificance of the self. The listening experience begins with the introductory ritual of ‘VdB 141 IC 1805’ – waves of deep sorrow, shimmering sounds that wash you clean of all pretence. It leaves you with no hiding place from the futility and darkness of existence and in that realisation there is a fearful beauty…and then Ghostheart Nebula reveal themselves as the journey begins in earnest, down a winding staircase of acceptance, through flickering torchlight and shifting shadows. ‘Sunya’ glides from measured pace to breathless blast as dual vocals entwine and a guest solo from Diego ‘Didi’ Cavallotti (ex-Lacuna Coil) rises from the darkness, a spiralling mote of gold dust that leaves a breathtaking trail of light in its path. Another perfectly chosen guest appearance from Øysten G. Brun of Borknagar adds acoustic guitar textures to ‘Infinite Mirror’ as its regal riffs and towering drum beats conjure cosmic melancholy that spans the stars, transposing tragedy to an infinite stage – the resulting emotion almost too much too bear. Every song on Blackshift is an essential element of the sonic journey and every song is magical in its own right. The ego crumbles before the indisputable truths that are invoked by the wonderful interplay of instruments on ‘Blackshift’, the incredible deep, harsh vocal parts in ‘Traces’ reverberate as if the universe itself is speaking and the song thrums with a quiet, shaking desperation…and it all leads to the masterful dynamic shifts of ‘Orphan Of Light’, where the quietest moments hold as much power as the gargantuan riffs. And when silence finally returns you are left drained, stunned and broken; with Blackshift, Ghostheart Nebula have created an experience staggering in its scope and emotional power.

Immaculately mixed and mastered by Øystein G. Brun (Borknagar, The Troops Of Doom, Sojourner etc) and adorned in the thought provoking artwork of Heike Langhans (Lord Of Shadows, Remina, Sojourner etc), every aspect of Blackshift has been carefully curated, the album as a complete entity sculpted into a monument that will stand resplendent through the years to come. Following in the footsteps of 2021s Ascension, Blackshift sees Ghostheart Nebula reaching higher, reaching further and touching greatness. Prepare to open your heart to eternity on October 17th, when Meuse Music Records will unveil this obsidian testament to infinite sorrows.
