Beneath a pale moon the ravens speak of murder; of lives lost and spirits trapped and the injustice of their fate. Their harsh, cracked voices become a strange music, a lament that fills the night and is harmonised by the dusty whispers of the witches, a counterpoint of consolation and promises of blood. And the Nattravnen presides, conducting its strange choir of the old and the forgotten, soothing and inflaming as the threnody demands. And its eyes have seen the future that awaits many years along the way and it offers them a covenant. The world is growing dark…and darker it shall become.
Releasing their debut album, Until Eternity Calls, back in 1997, Korp have been a simmering presence on the underground metal scene for decades, their poisonous elixir of black, thrash and death metal a treasure to those who have found their way through the shadows to their domain. And now a fourth full length album of Korp’s unique sonic sorcery is about to be unleashed, a collection of invocations with a potency and power previously undreamt of…And Darker It Shall Become!
The silence is torn asunder by the thunder of opener ‘Blood Upon The Throne’, lightning unleashed across the sky. Riffs, rhythms, melodies and caustic vocals work together to draw you ever deeper into the dark and there’s an eerie atmosphere swirling between the notes, a sense of forbidden secrets glimpsed between the trees. Facing the full storm-blast force of the aptly named ‘Furious Tempest Rise’ the cunning shifts and twists in Korp’s song writing become ever more apparent; the touches of individuality that lift them high above the multitudinous legions. ‘Feast Upon The Spineless’ has already been released as a single, along with ‘Bloodstorms’ – a fantastic pairing of songs, as catchy as barbed wire, that will tear a live venue apart. Every song demands attention, from ‘Heaven Ablaze’ which epitomises the evocative nature of And Darker It Shall Become, the manner in which it fires the imagination and summons dark, haunting images, to the multifaceted beast that is album closer ‘Graced By Flames’ – a song that combines a fire and force that knocks you back in your seat with folkloric melody, jagged, venomous thrusts and driving rhythms. Rich in the sort of riffs that make a headbanging response mandatory, steeped in the sinister and led by an imperious, domineering vocal presence, And Darker It Shall Become is a masterpiece of black magic.
Adorned in the brilliantly atmospheric and evocative artwork of Balázs Pénzes of Grafit Hamu Artworks (Witcher, Vrag etc) And Darker It Shall Become will be released on CD and digital formats by Grind To Death Records on September 5th. Prepare for an onslaught of darkness!
