In this place of memory and dry bones, where the crosses stand as decaying sentinels beneath the trees, draped in tattered robes of moss like mournful watchmen upon the path to Golgotha, he waits beside the path, haunting the spaces between the mist and the moonlight. The shadows gather to him, drawn to his aura of absence, making him one with the night – a shape of deeper darkness in the gloom. The tableaux of sorrow, secrets and silence set, he prepares for their coming; an eternal, aching hunger burning like a cold fire within the echoing, empty chambers of his heart. A time of feeding, of devouring and of dying, a time of passing through approaches on the soft, chill wind of midnight.
Painted in the hues of twilight, the deep colours of the in between times, the shades of fast-falling dusk and the darkening blood of the last rays of the setting sun, Nyrak’s black metal is infused with drama and rich musical narrative. The songs that form their astonishing second album, Devourer Of All, unfurl across vast canvases of the imagination, the music conjuring phantoms for the senses – enthralling and enfolding the listener within a dark world of melancholy and magic, terror and grandeur. With the magnificent opening track, ‘Eyes Of Time’ which roars into life like towering thunderclouds careering across a night sky torn apart by lightning, you are gathered into the embrace of Nyrak’s rain swept, cinematic sorcery. The Belgian band draw upon the infernal wellspring of Scandinavian black metal and then let their creative spirits run wild, entwining that dread, black soul in wicked thorns of dynamic, progressive musical elements and textured gothic atmosphere. The result is grandiose, epic, breathtaking pieces like album title track, ‘Devourer Of All’. While the music of Nyrak rages around you there is nothing else; the matters of the mundane world fade like pale, ephemeral ghosts in the face of its blazing fires and tumultuous emotions. From the regal splendour of ‘Lament’ to the stunning, multi-faceted gem that is ‘The Abstract Face Of Life’ which brings down the final curtain on Devourer Of All, this is an album of staggering scale and invention – an absolute triumph!
Founded by Guy Van Nieuwenhove (aka Nevel) in 2021, originally as a solo studio project, Nyrak has grown and evolved over the course of the last three years, via debut album Malvs, to become the fully fledged band and musical force that it is today. When Devourer Of All is unleashed on May 3rd, mixed and mastered at Project Zero Recording Studio (Nervosa, Serpents Oath, Carnation etc) and resplendent in its evocative artwork courtesy of Phoenix Mortis Art, the name of Nyrak will be carved into the consciousness of metal fans the world over. The burgeoning Belgian black metal scene has spawned another real contender. Beware the passing of the day – for the night belongs to them!
