"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy"
Hamlet - William Shakespeare
Formed in Manchester, UK in 2023, gothic metal troupe Reliquia released an array of singles over the first two years of their existence, most of which then found their way onto the 2025 compilation album, Fragments. Over the course of those recordings and numerous live shows, alongside the feted likes of Hexvessel, Godthrymn, Darkest Era and many more, the band developed their individual blend of melody and melancholy, enveloping atmosphere and beguiling mystery…loss, longing and resolute strength. And all the lessons learned and dark paths followed have led to this moment, this distillation of their creative vision, this tome of secrets…their debut full length album, In Theory And Practice.
In Theory And Practice opens with 'Caesar, Bejewelled' - a stillness, a held breath beneath slowly cascading notes and atmosphere, building layer upon layer, until the drums attack and the measured vocal tones become harsh exhortations from a bleeding throat. The melodies still sing above the snap and snarl, muscular thunder entwined in sonic spell craft and the listener is carried on into the dark dream of 'Temple Terrace', its buds of brooding introspection blossoming into heavy black flowers of heady, dizzying scent. The guitars in full force ring with haunting vibrancy and a solo climbs through liquid spirals above rich, resonant bass tones. The juxtapositions of emotional and musical power are hypnotic and each track leads you deeper and deeper into Reliquia's world of shadows, the way home long since lost and forgotten, all thoughts of return willingly abandoned by the path. The beautiful sadness of 'Crestfallen' takes you in its embrace, wraps you in the bittersweet reminiscence of loss, capturing you upon its sweet, beguiling hooks before the heavy atmosphere of 'Bone And Shale' settles upon your shoulders like a mantle of snow and sadness. The narrative unfurls with each word and note, stealing your heart with gentle, swaying stealth and wondrous illusion. The simply titled 'Interlude' is a swathe of dusk across the senses that lowers you into the final spellbinding gothic lament of 'Give'; guitar notes like starlight, pulsing, propulsive rhythms, words intoned with a controlled passion…an irresistible witches' dance. 'Give' is both conclusion and revelation, weighted with acceptance; acceptance of fate, of a dark road, a lonely way, of broken hearts and endless secrets, a way through life that is not for others. In Theory And Practice is an album that it is easy to fall in love with and cruelly hard to leave behind.
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Joe Clayton (Ba'al, Conjurer, Aggressive Perfector etc) with engineering assistance from long term Reliquia collaborator Ben McEwan, In Theory And Practice possesses a textured and layered sound, with a depth that draws you in and imprisons you within its velvet darkness. Adorned in the evocative artwork of Chris Kiesling aka Misanthropic Art (Katatonia, Demonical, Mortuary Drape etc) the gloaming majesty of In Theory And Practice will be unveiled on May 12th - and Reliquia's Cimmerian fairytale will truly begin.
