THE MEDEA PROJECT - KHARON LABEL: INDEPENDENT RELEASE RELEASE DATE: JUNE 20th 2025“…Kharon, demoniac form,
With eyes of burning coal, collects them all…”
from The Divine Comedy: Inferno, Canto 3 by Dante AlighieriOn the stygian shores of the lightless river, where spirits gather on the sloping beach of obsidian and hematite, awaiting passage across the waters of forgetting to the distant bank, lost in shadows and shifting mist...where the boatman with hungry eyes crosses from one world to another, one to the other, in a never ending journey. Here in this desolate place is where The Medea Project’s new collection of hymns, stories and incantations was born. Drawing on doom metal, death metal and black metal, on dark folk and darker dreams and something primal that burns within the tangled strands of memory and myth…this is Kharon.
It begins…melancholic, otherworldly majesty hangs in cold swathes of faded finery from the ringing chords and sinister, stumbling riffs of ‘Absence, In Loss’ and the certainties of reality start to slip through your fingers like ancient dust. The haunting, echoing notes that usher in ‘The Cave Song’, subtly shift your perceptions, drawing you through a diaphanous veil into a disorientating domain of flickering flame and encroaching gloom, of claustrophobic tunnels beneath the earth that open into breathtaking, cathedral like caverns…. From the simple melodies of ‘Purgatory Trapped’ that speak in elemental tones to the troubled heart, to the raw, feral black metal of ‘Upon Your Bones’; the languid, undead waltz of ‘Dance Of The Void’ to the cataclysmic defiance of ‘The End’ and the final binding of ‘Reborn’ – a whispered spell of possession, that ends as you step from the boatman’s ferry onto the sands from which there is no return. By entwining the atmospheric power of seminal death metal with the bleak, sundering weight of emotionally raw doom and the savage chill of the early black metal forces, then casting the ashes and powdered bone of Gothic dreaming upon it all, before igniting the nameless creature upon a funeral pyre of imagination and passion, The Medea Project have created an enthralling, soul consuming album, a new mythology for our dark and broken times.
Adorned in the haunting artwork of world renowned artist Daniele Serra (Stephen King, Clive Barker, Shining etc) and mastered to dreamlike perfection by Markus Stock (Ahab, Winterfylleth, Secrets Of The Moon etc), Kharon will offer passage across Acheron on June 20th. Its release will be celebrated with a special show at London’s Dingwalls 2 venue alongside My Silent Wake and The River.
