The concept of Léan was conceived by Lorelei Ether, keyboard player and vocalist for The Lust and Goot in 2018. She wrote the first songs for this new entity during a stay in hospital and then brought them to creative partner Vaarwel - noted for his work with Frozen Ocean, Goatpsalm, Meister Leonhardt and others. Together they poured their disparate and diverse talents into a remarkable elixir of contrasts and contradictions, working alchemical wonders to create something that was equal parts both of them and yet different to either. They had brought Léan to life. In the summer of 2026 they independently released a single, 'Desuetude', a song which had grown from a simple vocal and acoustic guitar arrangement to become something emotive and powerful, full of irresistible energy and momentum. Not only was 'Desuetude' well received, it also attracted the attention of the Apocalyptic Witchcraft label, known for their nurturing of intriguing and imaginative artists, who promptly signed the band for the release of their debut full length album - Méristème.
Méristème begins with 'Flagelliflory' - a scattering of enchanting, ringing notes that are then subsumed in darkness; but the darkness of Léan is one of many hues, from deep midnight blue to stygian black via the sombre purples of dusk. We are introduced to the intoxicating blend of vocals - the beautiful and hypnotic, the bitter and savage - the music's subtle sway and fierce blast, the breathtaking entwining of incongruous elements to create something rich and harmonious. What follows is an album imbued with a strange magic, where deceptively simple melodies wind their way through complex songs that constantly evolve, where works of distinct individuality form a smooth cohesive whole and an aura of desolate reflection manages, somehow, to lift the spirit. New single, 'Adrift' introduces Vaarwel's clean vocals, a regal, cultured tenor, while 'Scarmap' grips the heart as it presents a powerful dignity amidst a miasma of grief. Elsewhere, 'Waldeinsamkeit', meaning 'forest solitude', the first song that was written for the Méristème album, captures the essential spirit of Léan perfectly; the passion, the sadness, the solitude, the immensity of emotion. Lorelei Ether's keyboard work is superb here and throughout the album, also bringing particular lustre to the aforementioned gem, 'Adrift'. Other highlights include the penultimate 'A Victory Forlorn', the triptych of vocal personas combining to ignite the imagination and shape a song that resonates with the heart and within the memory. Final song, 'Wounds Grin' brings down the curtain on Méristème in magnificent fashion, its harsh beauty, grim splendour and blaze of emotion like a last desperate cry echoing into forever. What a beginning to their journey Léan have made…
Léan is a true partnership, with Vaarwel capturing the dreaming spirit of Méristème with his recording, mixing and mastering skills, while Lorelei Ether created the enigmatic artwork that adorns the album's cover. Together they have brought to life a set of songs that ignite the imagination and lead the listener through endless corridors of shadow and moonlight. Méristème will be released by Apocalyptic Witchcraft on Limited Edition Marble Vinyl, Digipack CD, Cassette and digital formats on February 12th.
