The clouds of war and the spirits of ignorance and avarice gather on the horizon, phantom lords of madness bringing turmoil unsought for and conflict unwanted. The voices of power proclaim our destiny and turn spotlights of hatred upon our once-friends now enemies, demanding bloodshed; their duplicitous tongues equating loyalty with violence and love with destruction. But there is a light in the darkness, a quiet voice that penetrates the incoherent rage and indignant lies…an angel that tells us to trust our hearts and not our self serving leaders. In the eye of the storm is a silence – and in this silence there is truth.
Since forming in Budapest in 2010, Hungarian symphonic metal troupe Meteora have been developing their unique, dark and many-layered approach to the genre – their line-up shifting and adapting as they settled ever more firmly into their musical and creative identity. Over the course of their three full length albums - Our Paradise, Tragedy of Delusion and …Of Shades and Colours (featuring a notable guest vocal appearance from Lord Of The Lost’s Chris Harms)– they have built a challenging and enthralling body of work. Now a new and exciting chapter in their career is about to begin. In 2022 respected webzine Games, Braaains And A Headbanging Life declared …Of Shades and Colours to be “a phenomenal symphonic metal album”. In 2025 Meteora have taken another bold step forward and outdone themselves once again, with In this Silence…
There is a sense of gathering darkness as the title track draws back the curtain on In this Silence and the keyboards swirl behind the ominous, juddering riffs. The triple vocals entwine, bringing distinct personalities to this song of many movements and elements - Noémi Holló’s beautiful voice complemented by the strong, clear tones of Atilla Király and the guttural growls of Máté Fülöp. ‘Rebirth’ follows – a track of immense power and high drama; Noémi’s voice like liquid silver, slipping effortlessly between the driving guitars and thunderously heavy drums, seemingly pursued through storm rent skies by the harsh vocal accompaniment. It is with ‘Rebirth’ that you really get a sense of just what an individual entity Meteora have become. The first single drawn from In this Silence, ‘Free’, is perhaps the heartbeat of this new collection. There’s an immediacy in its call for resistance, perfectly executed tension and release as it builds to a great keyboard solo and the main vocal melody is like an outstretched hand offering union and companionship in a world of division. This is the song that will draw new listeners into the shadowed depths and hidden tides of Meteora’s complex and rewarding sound. In this Silence concludes with ‘Ghosts’; Atilla’s keyboards and Noémi’s voice combining to create something magical - the calm after the storm. A superb guitar solo lifts this contemplative piece to another level and it provides the perfect, introspective conclusion to this first part in what will be a trilogy of EPs.
The different facets of Meteora’s sound have been allowed the space to shine by the careful mixing of Nino Helfrich (Thrash Cult, Traces Of A Life etc) and Dmitry Kim (Khors, Arhat etc), with the mastering sheen being applied by Joel Wanasek (Machine Head, Carnation, Dååth etc) and Helfrich. The final touches of magic – the album and single artwork and the excellent video that accompanies ‘Free’ – were delivered by Dronicon Films (Swallow The Sun, Katatonia, October Tide etc). ‘Free’ is out now – look for the full splendour of In this Silence on August 8th from H-Music!
