Refiner prepare to release Mistake

May 07, 2025

When Canadian multi-instrumentalist, composer and lyricist Christopher Adam joined Rottweiler Records and released the first EP from his Refiner solo project, Return To Dust, back in February, a second EP was promised to be following in its wake…and now that second EP has arrived! Mistake offers up two new tracks that continue the Refiner path established on Return To Dust, blending metalcore, electronics and ambience, but with a different emphasis on the comingled elements – creating again, fresh and unexpected sounds…

Opening track ‘upside uʍop’ conjures images of a neon lit night as riffs, melodies, bass, drums, powerful vocals and dark, brooding electronics shift and swirl around each other like oil and water. The bewitching alchemy of sounds leads you down dark alleyways into unsuspected musical territories – enthralling and unsettling in equal measure. Meanwhile title track ‘Mistake’ is different again…lush and rich, its ringing melodies draw you into its embrace where you confront huge, collapsing riffs adorned in electronic finery and swathes of synth driven atmospherics. Adam’s voice is used vibrantly and dynamically, an instrument in its own right adding to the multifaceted nature of the song. This is seriously heavy, but it’s also so very different, intriguing and unusual. This is music invoked by a creative approach and an individual vision.

As with the Return To Dust, there are bonus instrumental versions of the Mistake EP tracks being made available and you’ll be able to seek these out exclusively on Bandcamp. The potent elixir of the Mistake EP will be available from Rottweiler Records on May 16th, so be ready to explore…
